STORRS, Conn. — UConn men's hockey defeated Long Island University by a final of 4-1 to close 2025 with a victory. Kaden Shahan pitched in two assists while Tyler Muszelik made 28 saves in the win.
The Huskies started the first period strong, pressuring the Long Island defense. The Huskies had multiple opportunities to break open the scoring early but were turned away by the Long Island netminder. The Huskies special teams were tested early as a Jake Richard tripping penalty put the Sharks on the Power Play. While on the penalty kill, Kaden Shahan collected a loose puck at the blue line and then found defenseman Brendan Dunphy in the slot for the short-handed goal and the first goal of the afternoon. With the one goal lead, the UConn defense and goaltender Tyler Muszelik shined holding Long Island scoreless after one.
The Huskies momentum carried into the second period as they continued to pressure the LIU defense and goaltender Daniel Duris. Following a defensive change by LIU, the Huskies offense was limited. Both defenses were on display in the period as both net minders held strong refusing to allow a goal. With neither team finding the back of the net, UConn entered the period break with the one goal lead.
The Huskies offense came to life in the third period scoring three goals in the period. Freshman Carlin Dezainde started the scoring as he took a pass from Kaden Shahan and beat Duris for the second goal of the game. Later in the period following a penalty kill by the Huskies, Jake Percival found Ryan Tattle in the slot who ripped a shot top shelf for the third goal of the afternoon. Shortly after the Huskies extended their lead to four as a strong forecheck from Tabor Heaslip forced a turnover where the captain collected the puck and fired it past Duris for the goal. LIU found the back of the net late in the third period but was too late as the Huskies were able to secure the 4-1 victory to close out 2025.
UP NEXT: UConn will hit the road and travel to LIU for a matchup with the Sharks on Jan.3 at 2pm.
