Huskies Win a Thriller Over Holy Cross In Overtime

STORRS, Conn. – No. 8 UConn women's hockey defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders, 4-3 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. Kyla Josifovic scored the game-winning goal in the overtime period, giving the Huskies a win in their Hockey East opener. The win moves UConn to 6-2-1 overall this season.
Freshman goaltender Taylor Belchetz earned her first career start in between the pipes for the Huskies. Belchetz made 23 saves, earning her first career win.
UConn took an early lead with freshman defender True Thompson scoring her first career goal 12 minutes into the first period.
Holy Cross quickly responded, equalizing with a goal just 44 seconds later, making it 1-1.
UConn regained the lead three minutes later as freshman forward Peyton Anzivino netted her first career goal, putting the Huskies back in front, 2-1.
Later in the first period, senior defender Meghane Duchesne-Chalifoux extended UConn's advantage to 3-1 with her first goal of the season. UConn took the two-goal advantage into the first intermission, with shots favoring the Huskies in the first period, 14-7.
The second period saw UConn and Holy Cross locked in a defensive battle, with no goals scored. Holy Cross managed a series of shots early on, but the Huskies' defense, including blocks by Emma Eryou and Maya Serdachny, held firm. UConn's offensive attempts, featuring shots by Serdachny and Claire Murdoch, were consistently thwarted by Holy Cross goaltender Abby Hornung. The Huskies had multiple power play opportunities, including one in the final minutes after a cross-checking penalty, but they were unable to capitalize as the period ended scoreless. Shots favored UConn in the second period, 16-6.
In the third period, Holy Cross managed to score two goals in the final ten minutes, forcing the game to go to overtime.
In a tense overtime period, UConn secured the decisive game-winning goal from their senior captain Kyla Josifovic, marking her fifth goal and second game-winner of the season.
