Huskies Take Down No. 9 Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – No. 12 UConn women's hockey secured a 3-2 victory over No. 9 Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena. The win marks a major milestone for head coach Chris MacKenzie, who now has 200 career wins in 13 seasons at UConn. MacKenzie became the winningest head coach in program history during the 2023-24 season. The Huskies move to 2-2 overall this season.
UConn netminder Tia Chan was outstanding, making a season high 37 saves in the win.
UConn jumped out to an early lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first period, as senior forward Megan Woodworth recorded her second goal of the season, putting the Huskies ahead, 1-0.
Clarkson responded quickly with a goal just five minutes later, knotting the game at 1-1 with 8 minutes remaining in the first period. Both teams faced penalty trouble later in the period, but neither team could capitalize with additional goals. The period concluded with a 1-1 stalemate, with shots on goal favoring Clarkson, 9-6.
Clarkson took their first lead two minutes into the second period, giving the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead.
UConn capitalized on a Clarkson penalty with ten minutes to go in the second period as senior forward Kyla Josifovic netted her first goal of the season, leveling the game once again at 2-2.
UConn continued their momentum as senior forward Brooke Campbell scored what would become the game-winning goal 119 seconds later after the equalizer, putting the Huskies in the lead for good, 3-2. Campbell led the team with two points in the game.
Despite several attempts from Clarkson, UConn maintained their lead, ending the period with a 3-2 advantage. Shots on goal favored the Huskies in the second period, 12-11.
In the third period, UConn's defense, led by Chan, held firm against a persistent Clarkson attack. Chan made 19 saves in the final period. In a final push, Clarkson pulled their goaltender with just over two minutes remaining and went on a power play following a delay of game penalty against the Huskies. Despite the extra skater, UConn still held strong in their defensive zone, helping the Huskies secure a win over a top ten opponent.
