POTSDAM, N.Y. – No. 12 UConn women's hockey lost to No. 9 Clarkson, 2-0 on Friday night at Cheel Arena.
The first period started with Clarkson taking an early lead just 23 seconds into the game. UConn's Ashley Allard had multiple attempts on goal but was denied by Clarkson's goalie Holly Gruber. UConn's netminder Tia Chan made several saves, as Clarkson held a 1-0 advantage heading into the first intermission. Shots on goal favored the Golden Knights in the first period, 8-5.
Clarkson took control in the second period, doubling their lead with nine minutes remaining in the period. UConn struggled to find the net despite numerous attempts, including shots from Julia Pellerin and Allard, all of which were saved by Gruber. Clarkson took the two-goal lead into the second intermission. Clarkson led in shots on goal in the second period, 12-9.
UConn threw everything they had at Clarkson in the third period, generating multiple opportunities on goal, but Gruber held firm in net for Clarkson. Chan was key in keeping the Huskies within striking distance, making nine saves in the third period. Chan finished with 27 saves.
UConn's attempt to rally late with an empty-net strategy and a last-second shot by Pellerin ringing the pipe, left the Huskies goalless for the first time this season.
