Huskies Fall to Colorado College in Season Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The UConn men's hockey team fell to Colorado College by a final of 4-2 in the opening game of the 2025-26 season. Joey Muldowney and Tabor Heaslip scored for UConn, but the Huskies were unable to comeback after giving up two goals in the second period.
The game began with UConn striking early in the 1st period, as Joey Muldowney netted the opening goal 52 seconds into the start of the game, assisted by Jake Richard and Carlin Dezainde. This quick score gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage and set the tone for the period. UConn maintained control through faceoff wins and defensive stands, with Tyler Muszelik making several key saves.
As the period progressed, UConn's defense held strong despite a power play opportunity for Colorado College. However, with just 29 seconds left in the period, Colorado College managed to capitalize on another power play, scoring to tie the game 1-1. The period concluded with both team's level.
The second period began with Colorado College extending their lead early as back-to-back goals gave the Tigers the 3-1 lead. UConn responded midway through the frame with Tabor Heaslip finding the back of the net at 7:52, assisted by Viking Gustafsson Nyberg and Mike Murtagh, cutting the deficit to 3-2. UConn's power play attempts were resilient, but the period concluded with the team trailing by one goal, maintaining pressure on the opposition.
In the third period, looked to find the equalizing goal and had chances early including shots by Ryan Tattle and Muldowney that went just wide. UConn's penalty kill unit, managed to prevent Colorado College from capitalizing on their power play. As the period progressed, UConn's attempts to narrow the score were stopped by Colorado College goaltender Kaidan Mbereko, who made crucial saves against multiple shots, including those from Ethan Whitcomb and Dezainde. UConn pulled Muszelik in the final minutes, but Colorado College secured the 4-2 win with an empty-net goal.
UConn will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow Saturday, October 4 at 8pm EST.
