BOSTON — UConn men's hockey secured an 8-4 victory over Boston University Friday night, powered by a pair of power-play goals and a strong third period performance. Carlin Dezainde and Ethan Gardula both scored two goals, while Kaden Shahan and Ethan Whitcomb added multiple assists.
The first period began with Boston University jumping out to an early lead after scoring first at 13:57 with a goal. Shortly after Boston University extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Cole Eiserman at 12:11. UConn responded when Carlin Dezainde took a feed from Kaden Shahan and scored narrowing the gap to 2-1. In the final minute of the period, UConn capitalized on a power play with Jake Richard scoring at 00:58, assisted by Ethan Whitcomb, to tie the game 2-2. The period concluded with the teams deadlocked at two goals apiece.
In the second period Boston University once again took an early lead. The Huskies responded again when the Huskies forecheck stole the puck and Joey Muldowney found the back of the net assisted by Ethan Whitcomb, to level the game at 3-3. Following the Muldowney goal, the Terriers found the back of the net again for the fourth goal to regain the lead. Boston University was primed to take a 5-3 lead but senior Tyler Muszelik stopped a breakaway shot. Following the stop, Brendan Dunphy shot the puck up the ice to Kaden Shahan who found Alexandre Blais before finding Carlin Dezainde for his second goal of the night and the tying goal. Later in the period UConn capitalized on a power play at 7:31 when Ethan Gardula scored the go-ahead goal off a redirection, assisted by Kai Janviriya and Shahan, marking the eventual game-winning score. The period concluded with UConn leading 5-4. Huskies fired 17 shots on goal in the second period while holding the Terriers to six.
UConn extended their lead early in the third period when Tom Messineo scored while on the delayed penalty, assisted by Ethan Whitcomb and Jake Richard. UConn maintained momentum as captain Tabor Heaslip netted another goal midway through the period when Mike Murtagh kept the puck in the zone and found Heaslip wide open to give UConn the 7-4 lead. With Boston U. pulling their goalie near the end of the game, UConn capitalized on the opportunity with an empty-net goal by Ethan Gardula, securing the 8-4 victory. The game concluded with UConn firmly leading, securing the win with a final score of 8-4.
Ethan Gardula scored two goals, including the game-winning and a power-play goal, showcasing his offensive efficiency. Joey Muldowney found the net once and contributed with eight shots, maintaining pressure on the opposing defense. Kaden Shahan added three assists, effectively setting up his teammates for scoring opportunities. Ryan Tattle excelled in faceoffs, winning 63% of his 19 attempts, helping to maintain possession. Tyler Muszelik made 30 saves in goal, providing a solid defensive backbone for the team.
The Huskies will wrap up the home and home series tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 25 in Storrs. Puck drop is set for 5pm.
