Late Goal Lifts Huskies Over St. John's

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over the St. John's Red Storm on Friday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Charlie Holmes scored the game-winning goal with seven minutes remaining in the match, giving UConn three critical points in the conference standings. The win moves the Huskies to 3-2 in BIG EAST play and 8-3-3 overall this season.
Redshirt-sophomore Kyle Durham made five saves in the win, en route to his sixth clean sheet this season.
The first half began with both teams striving to maintain control, but neither side was able to find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes. UConn's Durham made three of his five saves in the first half. UConn's Edward Wester attempted to break the deadlock with the Huskies lone shot on goal attempt in the opening half. The first half concluded scoreless, with shots favoring St. John's, 3-2.
The game opened up in the second half with both teams creating more chances on goal. St. John's edged the Huskies, 7-6 in shots in the final 45 minutes.
UConn secured a decisive goal late in the second half as senior forward Charlie Holmes headed home the game-winning goal from a corner kick taken by Sabri Hanni in the 84th minute. Holmes nets his fifth goal this season, and his first game-winner in a UConn uniform.
