Huskies Fall to Ohio State, Split Weekend Series

HARTFORD, Conn. -Â The University of Connecticut men's hockey team fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at PeoplesBank Arena. The loss gives UConn a weekend split of the two-game series with the Buckeyes, moving the Huskies to 2-2 overall this season.Â
In the first period both teams exchanged shots early, with UConn's Jake Richard hitting the pipe at 18:23. The Huskies had four power play opportunities in the first period but were unable to capitalize despite leading in shots, 9-7 after the first 20 minutes.Â
UConn opened the scoring 35 seconds into the second period with a power-play goal by Joey Muldowney, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.Â
The advantage was short-lived, as Ohio State responded with a goal at 14:57, leveling the score at 1-1. The Buckeyes seized the momentum scoring another goal to take the lead with just under three minutes remaining in the second period, making it 2-1.Â
In his first career start, UConn netminder Kam Hendrickson managed to limit the damage, making 11 of his 26 saves in the second period.Â
In the third period, UConn's Ryan Tattle tied the game with 5:42 remaining in regulation, knotting the score at 2-2.Â
Ohio State responded right away with the game-winning goal just 17 seconds after the UConn equalizer, giving the Buckeyes the lead for good at 3-2. The Huskies continued to press for the tying goal, pulling the goaltender in favor of an extra skater, but Ohio State capitalized on the empty net, scoring with 74 seconds remaining in the game, putting the game out of reach for UConn.Â
