PRINCETON, N.J. – The UConn field hockey team (2-6) took home a much-needed win on Sunday afternoon against the Princeton Tigers on the road. This win snapped the Huskies' five-game losing streak.
While the Huskies dominated play through the first three quarters of the game, their relentless attempts on offense just couldn't put a point on the board. On the other side of the ball, UConn played a lockdown defense to keep the Tigers from scoring.
As the fourth quarter of the game rolled around, it was starting to look as though the teams were heading into overtime – something both the Huskies and the Tigers are quite familiar with this season. On a pass from junior, Madi Herb, junior, Sophia Ugo, made a diving shot just past the goalie to give the Huskies the lead. That was followed up by a goal from sophomore, Julia Bressler, and then another goal from sophomore, Sol Simone, to put the Huskies up 3-0 on the Tigers. Late in the final period of the game, Princeton was awarded a penalty stroke and they notched that one into the back of the net to cut UConn's lead.
The Princeton comeback attempt wasn't enough, and the Huskies held onto the ball as the final seconds ticked down on the clock and they stormed the field for the win. This is the second win for UConn this season.
Simone had a great performance on offense, scoring a goal and notching an assist. Freshman, Sanne Stout, was a force in the backfield, recording a few defensive saves and keeping the Huskies in the game.
UConn returns home next weekend after two weeks on the road to take on BIG EAST opponent, Georgetown, and Delaware. The first game versus the Hoyas is set for 1:00pm on Friday, September 22nd.
