Two School Records Fall at Battle of Beantown

BOSTON, Mass. - The UConn men's track & field team wrapped up their day at The Battle of Beantown at Boston University with a pair of school records being set. Â
The Huskies recorded six wins on the day at the unscored meet with senior Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) setting a new school record in the mile and junior Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) breaking the school record in the 600 meters.
"We continue to go out and take care of business and look good in the process," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "Across the board, a really professional job by this team. Wellington and Eric with school records and Terrel Williams in the high hurdles, just a big, big performance. We are very pleased with the consistency and the progression we continue to see from this group."
On the track…
- Senior Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) broke the UConn indoor mile record with a time of 4:00.93 to finish second overall. Van Der Els breaks the previous mark of 4:01.32 set in 2002 by Dan Wilson.
- Junior Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) got the win and a new school record in the 600 meters on Saturday. Ventura blazed his way to a time of 1:17.29, breaking the former mark of 1:17.36 held by Robert Rhodes (2016).
- Junior Noah Woodman (Hampstead, N.H.) was second in the 600 finishing in 1:19.40 and classmate Markus Bagley (Jersey City, N.J.) was fourth in 1:19.60, both new PRs.
- In the 60-meter hurdles, freshman Terrel Williams (Maplewood, N.J.) ran a blistering new PR time of 7.81 seconds for the win.
- Sophomore Stephen Sutton (Tolland, Conn.) got a gold medal performance in the 800 meters by posting a time of 1:52.80. He was followed by classmate Marzio Mastroianni (Branford, Conn.) in third at 1:53.56.
- In the 3,000 meters senior James Maniscalco (Fairfield, Conn.) was the top-finisher in the field posting a time of 8:21.08, a new PR by just over two seconds.
- Junior Joseph O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.79 seconds.
- The Huskies ran the distance medley relay for the first time the season and the foursome of Sutton, Mastroianni, Joshua Bedard (Tolland, Conn.), and Kevin Cawley (Massapequa, N.Y.) posted a time of 10:02.75.
- The 4x400 relay team of Nicholas Pronovost (Coventry, Conn.), Dante Bailey (Monmouth Junction, N.J.), Benjamin Grosse (Wayzata, Minn.) and Kasey Savage (Tolland, Conn.) ran the fastest time yet by a UConn foursome at 3:14.54 to finish second.
In the field…
- Junior Tyler Hrbek (Northvale, N.J.) got his second win of the season in the pole vault, besting the field with a height of 5.05 meters.
- Senior Daniel Claxton (Nesconset, N.Y.) was second in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.01 meters. Savage was sixth, matching her personal best height of 1.96 meters and set a new PR in the long jump at 6.83 meters.
- Freshman Marc Morrison (Orlando, Fla.) won the long jump with a leap of 7.10 meters, coming on his first attempt of the day. Senior Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.) was second, matching the distance of 7.10 meter, on his second attempt.
- Senior Chris Keegan (West Hartford, Conn.) was second in the weight throw posting a throw of 18.67 meters, his best of the season so far.
