Huskies Host St. John’s During Senior Day, Alumnae Weekend

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn (16-13, 8-4 BIG EAST) softball team enters the home stretch of the 2021 regular season, playing host to the St. John's Red Storm (9-17, 6-12 BIG EAST) this weekend in a three-game set at Burrill Family Field. The conference foes will face off Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader with first pitch of game one slated for 12:00 p.m. The Huskies and Red Storm will wrap up the series with a Sunday matinee.
On Saturday, UConn will honor graduate student Devon Casazza prior to Game 1 for her contributions to the program! Following the conclusion of the game, the Huskies will honor 22 program alumnae to celebrate and show gratitude for their contributions and support to our UConn Softball family! Additionally, UConn legend and former head coach Karen Mullins will be throwing out the first pitch prior to Game 2.
Sunday, the Huskies will recognize their Team Impact teammate Abbie Brouker, who is also 'graduating'.

Last Time Out…
UConn enjoyed its second BIG EAST series sweep and third conference series win, closing out the three-game set against Providence (3-15-1, 2-12-1 BIG EAST) with a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at Glay Field. In Saturday's doubleheader, UConn faced a pair of early four-run deficits, but the Huskies were able to rally back in both contests (6-4, 8-5) to pick up a pair of wins and sweep the two-game set.

- UConn ranks 7th in the NCAA in stolen bases/game with an average of 2.4 per contest. The Huskies are 70-of-84 overall on bag swipes, led by Aziah James (16, 1st in BE), Briana Marcelino (13, 2nd in BE) Hollis Wivell (11, T-3rd in BE), and Reese Guevarra (11, 6th in BE). Additionally, the Huskies' 125 runs, 110 RBI, rank third in the conference while their 27 homeruns are second to only Villanova.
- Freshman pitcher Payton Kinney (2.65 ERA) is second in the league in innings pitched (100.1). She also ranks second in opposing batting average (.201), third with 99 strikeouts, and T-3rd in wins (8).
- The pitching duo of Kinney, Meghan O'Neil (3.51 ERA, 85.2 innings), and Marybeth Olson (2.90 ERA, 9.2 innings) have combined to limit opposing hitters to a .241 batting average and a 3.04 ERA, both second in the conference, respectively.
- Briana Marcelino and Devon Casazza's seven dingers are tied for third… Reese Guevarra is fourth with 38 hits.
Scouting the Opponent…
- The Red Storm comes off a week that saw it go 1-4, defeating Providence in a makeup game on Monday followed by a loss to Stony Brook and a sweep at the hands of Villanova over the weekend at home.
- In Monday's contest against the Friars, Erin Brown worked a complete game victory, her second of the season against Providence while Gabriella Conca and Gretchen Bowie each added home runs.
- Kaitlin Mattera was one of the bright spots last weekend, as she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after going 8-12 against Villanova and clobbering a three-run home run in game two of the series. It was Mattera's second honor in three weeks.
All-Time Series…
UConn holds a 58-17 advantage in the all-time series between the schools. The Huskies posted a 7-4 victory in their last meeting back on March 13, 2016.
