PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn (16-13, 8-4 BIG EAST) softball team enjoyed its second BIG EAST series sweep and third conference series win, closing out the three-game set against Providence (3-15-1, 2-12-1 BIG EAST) with a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon at Glay Field.
Meghan O'Neil received the start in the circle and picked up her seventh win of the year. The sophomore went the full seven facing 27 Friar batters and tossed seven strikeouts.
UConn came out red-hot in the top of the first inning and put three runs on the board via a Jana Sanden home run. Reese Guevarra got the frame started and took up real estate at first when she reached on an error by the pitcher. Aziah James followed with a single to second, then Sanden stepped into the batter's box and ripped a bomb over the center field wall to give the team a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies added another run to their cause in the second as Lauren Benson scored on James' ground out to increase the advantage to four.
Providence responded in the bottom of the third to deny the UConn shutout bid, scoring on a single to center field to pull within 4-1. The Friars looked to creep a little closer but UConn thwarted the attempt and closed the inning out after catching Providence stealing.
UConn's defense sealed the victory, holding the Friars to just one hit with two stranded through the final four frames.
