Huskies Fall to Providence College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn women's volleyball team fell to Providence College 3-1 on Friday night. The Huskies fall to 2-5 overall with a 2-3 Big East mark, while the Friars improve to 4-1 on the season with a 2-1 record in conference play.
How it Happened
The Huskies and Friars would alternate points to begin a tightly contested first set. Providence would take a 17-16 lead and then stretch that lead forcing to UConn call timeout, trailing 20-17. The Huskies battled back with back-to-back points as Providence used a timeout. Out of the break, the Friars would hold on and take the opening frame 25-21.
In the second set, the Friars opened a 10-5 lead, forcing an early UConn timeout. Following the break, Providence opened a 15-9 lead before a 4-0 UConn run to bring the score to 15-13, forcing the Friars to take a timeout. Another 4-0 run saw the Huskies take a 17-16 lead, which they would hold onto and win the set 25-22 and tie the match at 1-1.
Providence cruised to start the third set and would maintain control throughout. The Friars went on to win the set 25-16 and took a 2-1 lead in the match. The Huskies responded well in the fourth set, getting a jump on Providence early on with a 12-9 lead. The Friars came back to take a 19-17 lead late, forcing UConn to call a timeout. Two quick points right out of the break tied things up for the Huskies, but Providence would regain the lead at 22-19. The Friars held off UConn in the end and took the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
Leading the Pack
Junior Caylee Parker, redshirt senior Genna Florig, and sophomores Allie Garland and Jasmine Davis each recorded seven kills on the night. Parker added four service aces, four blocks, and nine digs. Davis added seven digs and a service ace. Garland led the team hitting at a .368 clip and added two blocks, two service aces, and six digs. Sophomore Madi Whitmire had a team-high 19 assists and added nine digs. Fellow sophomore Mia Ruffolo led the Huskies with 10 digs.

UConn will take on the Friars again tomorrow, March 13th at Alumni Hall. The match is scheduled for 6:00pm.
