For the fourth time in the history of the program, the UConn men's golf team is leaving the mainland of the United States to compete in a tournament in Hawaii.
The Huskies wrap up their fall season this weekend, participating in the seventh annual Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course at Lahania, Maui.
"It's an amazing experience for our players to be able to play in Hawaii," said UConn Coach Dave Pezzino. "This is the type of experience we hope to give our players – the chance to compete against top-level teams on courses in areas of the country which they might not otherwise get the chance to see."
The 54-hole event, hosted by the University of Hawaii, features a 13-team field, five of which are ranked among the top 80 in the country, and is held over three days, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Robert Trent Sr.-designed Royal Ka'anapali Course is a 6,700-yard, Par 71 layout. Besides UConn and the host school, the field includes Kansas, ranked No. 10 in the nation, Nevada, Boise State, Denver, Colorado, Air Force, Cal State-Northridge, Gonzaga, Loyola-Maryland, Sacramento State, and Wyoming.
"The course is a great layout … the views are just captivating," Pezzino said. "But the conditions can be tough. It's usually very windy, and the field, of course, is very strong. It's what we aspire to in our program – trying to test our guys against great competition on challenging courses. This is just another addition of that philosophy. Our guys are very excited."
UConn has competed in four events so far on its fall schedule, finishing second twice and fifth twice.
Leading the Huskies' contingent will be sophomore Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.), who leads the team in scoring, averaging an impressive 69.9 per round and coming off an individual victory at the UConn Invitational and a tie for third at the Carolina Collegiate Invitational in UConn's last two events.
Also in the Huskies' lineup this weekend are seniors Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) and Nick Hampoian (North Reading, Mass.), and sophomores Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) and Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.). UConn freshman Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.) will be playing in the tournament as an individual.
Following the Ka'anapali Classic, the Huskies will be idle until they begin the spring portion of their schedule in February.
