STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team dropped its first conference contest of the season, 1-0, against ECU on Thursday night at Dillon Stadium.
The Huskies (4-4-1, 0-1 American)Â outplayed the Pirates (4-5-1. 1-0 American)Â for long stretches of the match but were unable to find the back of the net. UConn charted 15 shots and created six corner kick opportunities throughout the evening.
Kess Elmore nearly gave the Huskies the lead in the 7th minute by ripping a shot high on a Vivien Beil corner kick chance.Â
ECU logged seven shots on the night and capitalized on an opportunity in the 28th minute. The Pirates earned a corner kick opportunity and Daria Draovitch served a ball into the box. Jenna Dagles eventually found the ball at her feet and fired a shot towards goal that was blocked away by UConn defender Kara Long. However, play was eventually blown dead and the linesmen ruled that Long was inside the box when she knocked the ball away and awarded the lone goal of the match to the Pirates.
The Huskies did not go down without a fight putting forth a strong 20-minute charge that created numerous chances for an equalizer.
Elmore and Beil combined for five shots from the 62nd to 74th minute. One of the best came on a ball played ahead to Yamilee Eveillard. Eveillard avoided the goalkeeper and dropped a pass back to Elmore. But the UConn forward sailed her shot high.
UConn looks to rebound on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 pm. vs. Cincinnati at Dillon Stadium
