WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—The UConn softball (13-18) team took on the University of Hartford (11-14) in their rescheduled doubleheader, winning both games in five innings. The first game of the day was headlined by sophomore Marybeth Olson's no-hitter with the following full of an onslaught of efficient offense.
Game 1
Olson started in the circle for the Huskies and pitched the full five innings with seven strikeouts and only one walk. Her tremendous efforts led to her first no-hitter of the 2019 campaign. The UConn defense was in good hands as they followed in behind their leader committing no errors in the match up. Olson's phenomenal pitching notched her, her seventh win of the season.
On the offensive end, the Huskies knew no bounds as almost every starter posted a hit. However, the contest started off a little slow for both teams with neither able to break the seal until UConn blew the lid off in the top of the third.
Ashley Esty started off the half inning with a single to second base, and Reese Guevarra followed right behind with a single of her own. Guevarra advanced to second on an error by the left fielder and Esty scored. Hot-handed Briana Marcelino was due up next for the Huskies and knocked a doubled to right center to score Guevarra.
UConn scored several times in the next half inning with Kiwi McDaniel getting in on the action, notching a single to right field. Alexis Lemus took up real estate at first, sending McDaniel to second with a single of her own. Maura Glatczak doubled to center and put Lemus in prime scoring position after rounding McDaniel. Ashlee Dahman's single to left field, moving Glatczak to third and scoring Lemus. An Esty sacrifice fly to center would reward Glatczak and bring her in for the Huskies' fifth run of the afternoon. A fielder's choice closed out the inning for UConn but not before they scored three runs, on five hits, while leaving three stranded.
The Huskies did not stop there…doubling their scoring in what would prove to be the fifth and final inning. On a bases loaded situation, four UConn batters in, McDaniel moved to cross home plate. An Esty single rounded pinch runner Carissa Brizzi. A walk, single to right field, and a play on pinch hitter Emily Piergustavo brought in three more Huskies increasing the lead to 11-0.
Game 2
In what is becoming the 'UConn way', the Huskies posted three home runs in the latter game of the day on their way to a 17-1 victory.
For her second home run of the season, McDaniel smacked a four RBI blast over left center to open the game. A pair of innings later the current American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Marcelino displayed why she touts the title, as she knocked her three RBI homer to left field. Newcomer Lemus notched her first home run as a Husky in the fifth, mirroring Marcelino's spot to left field.
UConn scored at least two runs in every inning, scoring four in the opening and closing half innings. The offensive surge came in the fifth after Lemus' homer. Dahman advanced to second base on a wild pitch that sent Devon Casazza home to score. Brizzi's single to right field allowed Aziah James and Dahman to cross home plate. Much like game one, almost every starter nabbed at least one hit in the contest.
Junior Katie Koshes picked up her fourth win of the 2019 campaign tossing a pair of innings with only one walk. She was relieved by Kylie Gavitt who concluded the game against 14 Hartford batters.
UConn is back in action Wednesday, April 3rd in a single game at home versus UMass at 3:00 p.m.
