MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The March magic ran out for the UConn men's basketball team, as the Huskies experienced an 84-45 loss at the hands of top-seeded Houston Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament. UConn ends its season at 16-17.
Jalen Adams and Josh Carlton each posted a double-double for the Huskies, as Adams tallied 15 points and 10 boards while Carlton contributed 13 points and a team high 11 rebounds. Christian Vital was the next Husky close to double figures with nine points. Overall, the three players combined for 37 of UConn's 45 points.
Houston scored the first 11 points of the game (unanswered) and held an eight point advantage early on, 13-5, but UConn responded to cut the deficit to 18-16 after a 9-0 run finished with a hook shot from Josh Carlton. The Cougars countered with a 21-7 burst of their own to open up a 16 point lead – its largest of the half – and held a 39-25 cushion at the break.
UConn looked to make a comeback in the second half, but couldn't get much going offensively. Houston took full advantage of the Huskies' struggles and used a 19-1 run to open up a 29 point advantage, 59-30, with 13:29 left. The score never got any closer, as the Cougars cruised to an 84-45 win.
