UConn readies for Judi Garman Classic

STORRS, Conn.—The UConn softball team is headed to California for the Judi Garman Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif. The Huskies will open the month of March playing at least one game a day from Friday, March 1st through Sunday, March 3rd. UConn will take on CSUN, host Cal State Fullerton, Fresno State, New Mexico, and No. 2/3 UCLA.
The tournament is comprised of 36 games being split between two fields, Anderson Family Field presented by USA Softball and PGF Field the secondary field on-site of the Titan Sports. The latter is where the Huskies will spend the majority of their time with four out of the five games being played on there. Of the 14 teams, six are currently ranked in the top-25 with UCLA leading the way. Cal State Fullerton and New Mexico both received votes but were just outside of the rankings.

Cal State Fullerton has specific parking available, and encourages spectators to park in Lot A and walk to the field via the road between Titan Stadium and the track complex. For more information and directions, click here.

UConn is 3-9 after competing in several tournaments to start the 2019 campaign. The latest of which took place in Boca Raton, Fla. on the campus of Florida Atlantic during the 'Strike-Out Cancer' Tournament. As a team the Huskies are batting .213, with 27 runs, on 54 hits, 24 RBIs, slugging .264, with an on-base percentage of .292, and 9-for-10 in stolen bases. Freshman Ashley Esty is leading the way batting .400 and sophomore Briana Marcelino slugging .414.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
CSUN (4-9) the Matadors were picked fifth in the Big West Conference preseason poll nabbing 32 points in the poll head of UC Riverside, Cal Poly, and UC Santa Barbara. Ninth-year head coach Tairia Flowers has 19 returning letterwinners with eight of those being starts and five pitchers. CSUN returns four student-athletes who garnarerd All-Conference honors last season; Jillian James (All-Freshman), Mackenzie Babbitt (Second Team), Jessica Alexander (Second Team), and Megan Stevens (Honorable Mention). Coach Flowers welcomes six freshmen to the 2019 roster. The Matadors have faced off with several ranked teams already; #25 Oregon, #12 Arizona State, and #7/9 LSU.
Cal State Fullerton is out to a 9-6 start after head coach Kelly Ford signed a contract extension through the 2024 season this past January. The Titans were selected to win the Big West Conference for the fourth consecutive year announced at the beginning of the season. Cal State Fullerton received six first-place votes for a total of 62 points. Senior Ari Williams and freshman Alexa Neil both earned Big West weekly awards for their efforts last week, taking the titles of Field Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week respectively. The Titans also have an alum who recently earned a spot on the Canadian National Team Roster in Shianne Brannan.
Fresno State is 6-5 after taking on several opponents that received votes or are highly ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll; UCLA, Oregon State, and Long Beach State. The Bulldogs opened the 2019 season in Hawaii at the three-day Paradise Classic. Fresno State was picked to finish second in the Mountain West preseason poll and received one first-place vote for a total of 57 points just behind Boise State. The Bulldogs returned seven starting position players who accumulated numerous confernce accolades last season. Hailey Dolcini was named Pitcher of the Week a few weeks ago after posting an ERA of 1.87 in three games, pitching 15 innings, with 11 strikeouts, a complete-game victory over Georgia State, and allowed only one run in three innings pitched versus No. 2/1 UCLA.
New Mexico has taken on ranked opponents as well going 5-9 overall against #9 Arizona and #7 Alabama, falling to the Crimson in a very close 1-0 decision. The Lobos added nine newcomers to the roster with seven of those being freshmen and a pair of junior transfer pitchers. The reminder of the roster is made up of the 10 returners who played vital roles during the 2018 season. New Mexico is under the guidance of second year head coach and alum Paula Congleton.
UCLA is out to a hot start with a win streak of 14. The 14-0 Bruins are 4-0 at home, 1-0 away and 9-0 when at a neutral site. UCLA has played seven games that have ended in six innings or less. Redshirt-junior Rachel Garcia and freshman Megan Faraimo have been honored by the Pac-12 multiple times, Garcia tabbed Pitcher of the Week for the third time while Faraimo earned Freshman of the Week honors for the second week in a row. Faraimo has two no-hitters this season with the second coming against Colorado State for the 111th in UCLA history.
