SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The UConn (3-3) softball team traveled to compete in the two-day Upstate Classic, taking on the Terriers of Boston University (4-3) and host Spartans of USC Upstate (5-1) today.
The Huskies faced the Terriers in an early match up with a 9:00 a.m. first pitch followed by a brief intermission before taking on the Spartans in the late afternoon.
Game 1
Boston got out ahead of UConn in the opening inning as a pair of singles and a ground out would provide them with their initial three runs. However, the Huskies became acute to the Terriers' offensive game plan and kept them scoreless for a pair of innings. Several doubles and a home run would lead Boston to its seven runs to take the game.
The Huskies did not go quietly, popping off at least one hit in every half inning but one. Designated player Chloe Kerns knocked a crucial three RBI double into right field in the top of the fifth for UConn's first runs of the game.
The Huskies posted 11 hits, the most in a game so far this season against the Terriers. Devon Casazza led the multi-hit effort and also ended the game with a double, blasting hers down the left field line. Joining Casazza in the hitting frenzy was Kelli Bates, Carli Cutler, and Reese Guevarra.
Jill Stockley (1-2) led UConn in the circle where she delivered a pair of strikeouts, facing 30 batters through the course of six innings.
Game 2
Briana Marcelino put UConn on the scoreboard with a two RBI double to right center where she scored Guevarra and Marybeth Olson to tie the game up with Upstate at two all in the top of the second.
Both teams played lockdown defense through several innings as neither team gave up a hit until Upstate's eventual score in the sixth. Led by Olson (1-1) in the circle this tough Husky defense walked only one Spartan, while striking out the rest or getting quick outs when the ball was in play.
An Upstate home run to left center would seal the game at 3-2 with UConn was unable to cross home plate.
Next up, the Huskies will play two more games on Saturday in Day Two of the Upstate Classic against the Falcons of Bowling Green (3 p.m.) and a rematch against the Spartans (5 p.m.).
