Huskies Fall at Maine, 5-1

ORONO, ME – The UConn women's hockey team fell to Maine, 5-1, Friday afternoon in the first game of this weekend's series against the Black Bears. The Huskies got 16 saves from junior goaltender Morgan Fisher and four saves from freshman Samantha Carpentier-Yelle in the loss.
Maine got two goals and two assists from freshman Celine Tedenby, while junior Teresa Vanisova added a goal and an assist to lead the way. Junior goaltender Carly Jackson made 24 saves to post the win.
The Black Bears outshot UConn 12-7 in the first period and was finally able to take advantage as Vanisova opened the scoring at 19:35 to make it 1-0.
The home team tacked on three more goals in the second stanza. Tedenby tallied a goal 6:37 in the second to make it 2-0 and then again at 11:48 to push the lead to three goals. Maine made it 4-0 on Michelle Weis's tally at 13:52.
UConn ended the shutout bid at 9:35 in the third period. The Huskies, who got their offense kick-started in the third, scored off a takeaway as junior Briana Colangelo buried her seventh of the season.
The Black Bears ended any thoughts of a comeback with an empty netter at 18:22 off the stick of Maddie Giordano.
First Period
After a defensive battle for much of the period, the Black Bears opened up the scoring with just under a minute to go in the first, as Vanisova converted on a backhander. The Huskies were outshot 12-7 in the opening period.
Second Period:
UConn held a 10-8 shot advantage and won 12 of the 22 face-offs, but Maine put three on the board in the second to push its lead to four goals.
Tedenby scored through-the-five-hole after firing a shot from the left face-off circle at 6:37. Tedenby made it 3-0 at 11:48 after converting from right between the face-off circles.
The Black Bears went up 4-0 at 13:52 after nailing another shot from between the face-off circles, this time from Weis.
Third Period:
UConn finally cracked the scoring column at 9:35 in the third off a Maine turnover. Briana Colangelo intercepted a pass and sunk a backhander to pull within 4-1.
Maine ended any ideas of a comeback at 18:22 as Giordano put home an empty netter off a four-on-one break.
