STORRS, Conn. --- UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley has announced the addition of Sal Alosi to his staff as Director of Human Performance, in charge of the physical, nutritional and wellness aspects of the men's basketball program.
Alosi comes to UConn with extensive experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, most recently serving for six years as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the UCLA football team.
"I am very pleased to welcome Sal to our program at UConn," Hurley said. "He has a proven history of success in the field of strength, conditioning and nutrition and I know he will foster the kind of culture and work ethic that will greatly benefit our players."
"I'm humbled by the opportunity and I'm really looking forward to getting started," Alosi said. "UConn's basketball history precedes itself. I look forward to working with Coach Hurley and the staff and getting to know our student-athletes."
Alosi explained that his plans for the UConn program go far beyond just strength and conditioning.
"We will build a 24-hour wellness program, where the time spent off the court and out of the weight room will be emphasized just as much as the time spent training," he said. "We will be educating our team about how to eat, how to sleep, how to hydrate, how to recover -- establishing a game plan in all areas that can have a positive impact when it comes to on-court performance. There is a much greater commitment than just running and lifting. Ultimately, the tools we teach our players here will benefit them on and off the court, and long after their time at UConn."
Alosi, 41, a native of Massapequa, N.Y., was not only in charge of strength and conditioning at UCLA, but also oversaw the UCLA football nutrition program, and worked closely with the medical and training staffs to develop programs pertaining to injury prevention and injury rehabilitation.
Previous to his time at UCLA, Alosi was at Bryant University (Smithfield, R.I.) for one year, serving as the head strength and conditioning coach, directing all 22 of Bryant's varsity programs.
Before his stint at Bryant, Alosi spent nine years involved in the NFL, where he was head strength and conditioning coach for the New York Jets (2007-2010) and the Atlanta Falcons (2006), after serving as assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Jets (2002-05).
He began his professional career at Hofstra University, serving as assistant strength and conditioning coach in 2001. That followed his college playing career as a four-year letter-winner as a linebacker for the Hofstra football team, helping the Pride earn back-to-back I-AA quarterfinal playoff appearances in 1999 and 2000 and leading the team in tackles as a senior.
Alosi earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science from Hofstra in 2001. He and wife Michele are the parents of two children, Sal and Gianna.
