HARTFORD, Conn. - The No. 20 UConn baseball team captured a series-opening victory vs. Tulane, 6-2, on Friday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
Mason Feole set the tone on the hill with a quality start on the hill for the Huskies The left-hander allowed just four hits, one earned run and struck out nine to notch his sixth win of the year.
After the Huskies were shutout at Cincinnati last Friday, UConn posted a three-spot in the opening inning for their starter. Back-to-back singles from John Toppa and Anthony Prato set the stage for Zac Susi. The UConn junior captain drilled a two-run triple to center to push the Huskies ahead. A couple pitches later, Susi scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 UConn.
Isaac Feldstein added to the lead in the fourth with his 11th home run of the year, a solo shot out to left field, giving UConn a 4-0 lead.
In the eighth inning with a 5-2 lead and the bases loaded with one out the Huskies called on their closer, P.J. Poulin. The lefthander immediately got a 6-4-3 double play to get UConn out of the jam.
Mike Woodworth added to the lead in the eighth with a no-doubt solo home run to left field. The cushion was enough for Poulin who closed out his 11th save of the season.
The three-game series resumes Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. at Dunkin' Donuts Park. The game can be viewed on WCCT-TV (The CW) in the state of Connecticut and streamed on ESPN3/WatchESPN.
