UConn Throwers Highlight 2017 Outdoor Debut

ORLANDO, Fla. - The UConn women's track and field team kicked off the 2017 outdoor season Saturday at the UCF Black and Gold Challenge.

Senior Emily Durgin won the 1500m with a personal best time of 4:28.81. Fellow seniors Katie Foley (4:46.46) and Sydnee Over (4:50.22) also finished in the top-10 of that event and sophomore Hannah Fleming came in 16th (5:06.67).
UConn's rookie class dominated in the throws, claiming first-place spots in all four throwing events. Freshman Divine Oladipo took home two first-place titles, winning the shot put with a 15.24m throw and the discus with a 49.44m toss. Freshman Chanell Botsis launched a 58.45m throw to win the hammer throw and freshman Thalia Ghalam won the javelin (43.79m).
In the 5000m run, sophomore Haley Hasty brought home third place, coming in at 18:25.50. UConn stood out in the 3000m steeplechase, placing three athletes in the top-five.
Sophomore Courtney Akerley won the 3000m steeplechase, senior Alexis Panisse finished just behind in second place and senior Kelsey Swanson took fifth.
Three Huskies finished in the top-10 of the 400m dash. Freshmen Kristina Cherrington (57.69) and Tia Strackman (59.84) finished in seventh and eighth respectively while senior Sydnee Over led the team with a fourth-place finish (57.32).
