CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The UConn women's lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, as it fell to No. 3 Boston College, 13-5, at Newton Field. The Huskies dropped to 4-4 on the season with the setback, while the Eagles remained unbeaten (8-0) in 2015.
Boston College opened the scoring 43 seconds into the match, and the Eagles would push their lead to three after a goal by attacker Covie Stanwick. Connecticut responded, tallying three straight goals over the next seven minutes to even the match.
UConn was unable to sustain its momentum, and Connecticut's struggle on the draw left the Huskies with little quality scoring chances the rest of the way. The Eagles finished the match with a 16-3 advantage in draw controls over Connecticut, which scored just two goals in the final 48 minutes of the contest.
Husky junior attacker Carly Palmucci (Herndon, Va.) netted two of UConn's first three goals, including a free position score with 18:44 left in the half to pull UConn even. Midfielder Alexandra Crofts (Westport, Conn.) marked the other UConn player to register a goal in the first half. She tallied her 10th score of the game after receiving a great pass from attacker Katherine Finkelston (Leonardtown, Md.).
Finkelston found the back of the net with 12:26 remaining in the match to snap a 38-minute scoring drought for the Huskies, and sophomore Ally Tilley (Setauket, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season with two minutes to play.
Midfielders Mikaela Rix and Sarah Mannelly led the offensive charge for the Eagles, who outshot the Huskies, 30-15, on Saturday. Rix tallied four goals, while Mannelly totaled five points on three goals and two assists.
UConn junior goalkeeper Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) recorded 10 saves to go along with a team-high four caused turnovers and a ground ball. The Huskies boasted 11 caused turnovers as a team, and Connecticut converted all but four of its 21 clear attempts.
The Huskies are back in action on Wednesday when they face in-state foe Fairfield on the road at Rafferty Stadium. The match gets underway at 3 p.m.
