AMHERST, Mass. - The UConn women's lacrosse team fell in overtime to UMass, 7-6, on the road Wednesday at McGuirk Stadium despite three goals from junior attacker Katherine Finkelston (Leonardtown. Md.). With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 0-2 on the year and 3-8 all-time against the Minutewomen.
UMass tallied the game-winner just 46 seconds into the sudden victory overtime period on a free position attempt. UConn senior midfielder Emily Anderson (Killingworth, Conn.) was called for the foul, and Minutewomen attacker Holly Turner converted after the penalty, slipping it past Connecticut sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.). Nee would finish with four saves for a Husky team that ended the match with a 15-13 shot advantage.
For the second straight game, the Huskies opened the scoring, as Finkelston tallied her first goal of the season two minutes into the contest. The Minutewomen would get on the board four minutes later, and two more goal UMass goals gave them a 3-1 lead with 23:07 left in the half.
UConn junior attacker Carly Palmucci's (Herndon, Va.) third goal of the season cut the Husky deficit to one (3-2) before UMass midfielder Hannah Murphy netted her second score of the afternoon to make it 4-2 Minutewomen. Finkelston's second goal of the match came with just over 10 minutes left in the period, and the two teams headed into the break with UMass leading 4-3. Wednesday marked the 15th career multi-goal game for the Leonardtown, Md. Native.
The Huskies struck first out of the break, breaking a 16-minute scoreless drought after junior midfielder Alexandra Crofts (Westport, Conn.) scored her second goal of the year to even the score at four. UMass regained its lead (5-4) on Murphy's third goal of the afternoon, and attacker Erika Eipp pushed the Minutewomen's lead to 6-4 after scoring with 19:12 to go in the game.
UConn wouldn't trail by two for long, as sophomore attacker Jordan Jacqueline (Los Gatos, Calif.) notched her first goal of 2015 to make it 6-5 Minutewomen. The match saw another lengthy scoreless drought (15:50) before Finkelston evened the game at six, netting her third score of the game with just 2:32 to go. The goal was setup by senior attacker Grace Presnick, (Suffield, Conn.) who found some space near the left side of the 8-meter box and slipped a pass to Finkelston directly in front of the goal.
Connecticut junior midfielder Alyson Fazio (Methuen, Mass.) nearly won it in regulation, but her shot was saved by UMass goalkeeper Rachel Vallarelli, and the two teams headed to overtime. The match went to sudden victory overtime after neither team was able to find the back of the net in the previous two three-minute extra periods.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday when they hold their home opener against Dartmouth at the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
