UConn Blanks Seton Hall In BIG EAST Opener

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -The UConn softball team opened up their 2012 BIG EAST schedule with a 6-0 shutout over Seton Hall to improve to 8-11 on the season and 1-0 in conference action.
The Huskies, who tallied 12 hits, jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Marissa Guches homered to left field to notch two runs on three hits. It marked the redshirt junior's third homerun of the season.
Holding a 3-0 advantage heading into the final inning, Connecticut put the lid on the game when they added three more runs on five hits. Freshman Emily O'Donnell continued her strong freshman showing when she hit a two-run bomb to left center. Sophomore Maddy Schiappa was the final Husky to cross home plate on a throwing error by the Seton Hall shortstop.
Junior Kiki Saveriano surpassed the .500 mark with Friday's win as she improved to 6-5 on the season after throwing the complete game and shutting the Pirates out, including striking seven out. Friday's shutout was Saveriano's third shutout of the season.
The Huskies continue their three-game series with the Pirates on Saturday, March 24, when they play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
