Softball Sweeps Seton Hall Series In BIG EAST Opener

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - UConn posted back-to-back 3-1 wins over conference foe Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon for their third straight victory. The Huskies' two Saturday wins allowed the squad to sweep their BIG EAST opening weekend. Connecticut improved to 10-11 and 3-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Pirates fell to 15-15 (0-3 BIG EAST) on the season.
In the first game, the Huskies were once again the first to record a run as they tallied two in first inning and the final run of the game in the second. Freshman Emily O'Donnell had a RBI-double to right center which scored senior Jen Ward. O'Donnell would add the second run on a single by Brittany Duclos. Ward would then register a RBI when she singled to right field as Kim Silva reached home in the second inning.
The Huskies, now owning a 38-15 all-time mark against the Pirates, outhit SHU 12-9 on the day as the UConn pitchers struck out nine Pirate hitters on the day. Freshman pitcher Lauren Duggan improved to 3-4 on the season as she earned the win the first game, while junior Kiki Saveriano (7-5) was the winning hurler in the second game. Senior Ali Adelman notched her fourth save of the season with her two innings pitched in the first game where she struck out three to conclude the contest.
Meanwhile, in the second game the Huskies came back from a 1-0 deficit to earn the win. UConn was trailing as they entered the fourth inning when senior Amy Vaughan kicked things off with a double followed by Silva sending the ball over the right field fence.
Holding a 2-1 advantage, UConn concluded the day capitalizing on a Pirate error in the seventh inning to end the game with a score of 3-1.
The Huskies will host their home opener on Tuesday, March 27, in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. against Sacred Heart.
