STORRS, Conn. - Despite a three-goal effort from both M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Lauren Kahn (Nanuet, N.Y.), the University of Connecticut lacrosse team fell to Syracuse, 17-9 this afternoon at the Carrier Dome. The Huskies fall to 6-5 on the season, while the Orange improve to 4-6 on the year.
Despite going into halftime tied at 6-6, the UConn defense gave up 11 second half goals as the Huskies dropped their first road conference game of the year.
Lapham posted back-to-back goals just three minutes into the contest to give UConn a 2-1 lead, but Syracuse's Katie Webster answered with a goal in the sixth minute to tie the game at 2-2. Kahn and Stefanie Burra (New Fairfield, Conn.) gave the Huskies a two goal lead after tallying consecutive goals in the eighth and 12th minutes, but the Orange would once again answer.
Syracuse posted four straight goals during the middle of the first half to gain a 6-4 lead, but Kahn and Mackenzie Rainone (Syracuse, N.Y.) responded with two goals under the six minute mark to tie the game at 6-6. Both teams went into the halftime break with six goals and 12 shots, but the Orange came out on fire during the second half to take a commanding lead.
The Orange tallied nine straight goals to open the second half and take charge of the contest, as they held a 15-6 advantage with six minutes left. UConn was not able to get on the board during the second period until the 24th minute when Jordan Christopher (Downington, Pa.) tallied her seventh goal of the season. Syracuse added on two additional goals before Lapham and Kahn closed the contest with a pair of goals in the final minute, for the 17-9 Orange victory.
Syracuse held a 33-18 lead in shots throughout the contest, while they also had a 23-13 advantage in ground balls.
Brittney Testa (Bridgewater, Vt.) played all 60 minutes in goal for the Huskies, posting 11 saves, her fourth multi-save game of the year.
UConn will stay on the road, as the Huskies travel to South Bend, Ind. next weekend to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday, April 16. The contest will begin at 12:00 noon at Arlotta Stadium on the UND campus.
