STORRS, Conn. - Lauren Kahn (Nanuet, N.Y. ) and Lauren Gunning (Hunt Valley, Md.) each posted four goals as the University of Connecticut lacrosse team topped Sacred Heart 19-11 this afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The 19 goals marked a season-high for the Huskies, while it also marked just the sixth time in the history of the program that UConn has scored 19 or more goals. With the win, UConn is now 5-1 on the year, while Sacred Heart falls to 1-4.
The Pioneers controlled play at the beginning of the game, posting back-to-back goals to take a 2-0 lead after just three minutes of play. The Huskies answered with two of their own goals, from Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) and Gunning to even the score at 2-2. SHU and UConn traded goals for the next four minutes, as Sacred Heart held a 4-3 lead with 19 minutes left in the first half.
The Huskies closed the first half with six straight goals though and allowed just one Pioneer tally, as UConn went into halftime with a 9-5 advantage. Kahn posted two of her four goals during that stretch, as she tallied goals in the 17th and 14th minute.
The Huskies continued their momentum in the opening minutes of the second half as they posted four goals in the first five minutes. During that span Jordan Christopher (Downingtown, Pa.), Kacey Pippitt (New Canaan, Conn.) and Gunning posted goals, with Christopher notching two, as UConn opened up a 13-5 lead.
After trading goals once again, UConn posted three straight to put the lead at 17-7 before the Pioneers closed the gap with three unanswered goals of their own. Shannon Kerr (Caledon, Ont.) and Kahn gave the Huskies a nine-goal lead in the sixth minute when they posted back-to-back goals less than 50 seconds apart, putting the score at 19-10 UConn. The final goal of the game was scored by Sacred Heart's Kate Kmiotek, as she posted her third goal of the game with just 19 seconds left on the clock.
Kahn and Christopher both notched a team-high three ground balls against Sacred Heart, while Morgan O'Reilly (West Sayville, N.Y.) had a team-best six draw controls. The duo of Megan Lally (Westwood, Mass.) and Jessica Mucci (Cortlandy Manor, N.Y.) each had two caused turnovers, while Brittney Testa (Bridgewater, Vt.) made six saves in net for the Huskies.
UConn will open BIG EAST play next weekend, when the Huskies host Rutgers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (March 19). Saturday's contest will be High School Day, with the first 100 fans receiving free UConn Lacrosse t-shirts.
