WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Connecticut lacrosse team dropped to 0-2 in the BIG EAST after its 18-9 loss at No. 15 Georgetown on Monday. In their first game against a nationally-ranked opponent this season, the Huskies were led in scoring by redshirt senior Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson, Ohio). Mitchelides scored a career-high four goals against the Hoyas at the Multi-Sport Field.
Mitchelides scored four times on four shots on goal as a combination of three Georgetown goaltenders were unable to make a single save against the Huskies. UConn's senior Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) made a season-high 11 saves as the Hoyas outshot the Huskies 38-13 in the game.
Georgetown used a 12-goal first half effort to keep its conference record perfect through three games. The Hoyas were led in scoring by Molly Ford who contributed two goals and three assists to the midday effort. Jacqueline Giles led Georgetown in goals scored with three while in total there were five multiple goal scorers for the Hoyas.
After Mitchelides opened scoring less than two minutes into the game, the Hoyas responded with six unanswered goals to take the lead before a mark by sophomore M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) off an assist from classmate Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) ended the run at 18:21. Mitchelides scored her second of the game before the Hoyas would capture a 12-3 advantage at the half with a six-goal run to close out the first.
Mitchelides scored her third goal of the game to answer one of what would be one of three free-position goals by the Hoyas. Georgetown's Ashby Kaestner opened the half with her lone goal of the game of a free-position opportunity less than three minutes in.
The Huskies kept toe-to-toe with the Hoyas in the second half with the scoring all even at six goals aside. Tupper got on the board for the first time in the game at 19:53 and tallied her second with 10:30 remaining in regulation. UConn scored the final two goals of the game with freshman Dorian Gilmartin-Dzitko (Hillsborough, N.J.) and senior Katie Devaney (Fayetteville, N.Y.) adding to the Husky total in the final five minutes.
UConn's overall record drops to 7-4 while the Hoyas's overall record is all even at 5-5.
The season continues when the Huskies host Syracuse on Friday at 4 p.m. for UConn's Friends of Jaclyn game at the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex. The first 50 fans in attendance will receive a free bleacher seat and all will enjoy a post-game autograph session with the team.
