HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Two three-run innings by Boston University was too much to overcome as the University of Connecticut softball team fell 6-4 Saturday afternoon at the Hofstra Tournament.
Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) was outstanding on the day for the Huskies going 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Her classmate Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) was near perfect on the day going 3-for-4 and coming across the plate twice.
The Huskies fall to 6-12 on the year as freshman pitcher Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) earned her fourth loss of the season pitching 4.2 innings and striking out six. Boston University picked up their ninth win of the season, evening their record out at 9-9
The Huskies got out to a fast 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as a double by Vaughan brought home Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) and DeLuca.
After allowing the Terriers to take the 3-2 lead in the top half of the third inning, Connecticut rebounded to tie things up in the bottom half of the frame. After Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) started things off with a single through the right side, she moved to second on a single by DeLuca, to third on a single by Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) and came home after Vaughn drew the RBI walk which evened the game up at three-all.
In the fifth, BU took the lead after a bloop hit down the third base line and added couple insurance runs to their total. The Huskies tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, as they got one more across. DeLuca crossed the plate for the second time on the day after she was driven in on a double to left center by Roy. The lead was too much to overcome as the Huskies finished with a 6-4 loss.
UConn will finish out their tournament play Sunday when they rematch first Boston University followed by Hofstra with play beginning at 10 a.m.
