HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut softball team surrendered nine runs in six innings, just five of which were earned, en route to their 9-1 loss against Boston University in game number three of the Hofstra Tournament.
With the loss, the Huskies are currently on a four-game skid dropping to 6-13 on the year while Boston University improves their record to 10-9 on the season.
The Terriers recorded at least one run in each inning other than the fourth, netting three in both the first and sixth innings. The Huskies scored their lone run of the game in the second.
BU got on top early with a three-run first inning, but all of their runs recorded were of the unearned variety as their one, two and three hitters all came across the plate.
The Huskies cut into the BU lead in the top of the second. Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.), who had a stellar Saturday, got on base in her first at bat of the day on Sunday with a single to right field advancing on to second base after an error by the Terrier rightfielder. A few batters later, Vaughan moved up to third as Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.) grounded out to the pitcher and crossed home plate after another fielding error by the Terriers, this time the third baseman to bring the BU lead to just two.
Boston University got the run back in the bottom half of the frame via a homerun and continued to add to their lead throughout the rest of the shortened run rule game.
Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) and Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.) split the time on the mound during the day. Sullivan began the game pitching two innings while allowing five runs, just one earned, and striking out four. Adelman replaced Sullivan allowing four more runs in the final four innings of play.
The Huskies are back in action in their final game of the Hofstra Tournament when they take on the host team at 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
