STORRS, Conn. - For the third-straight game, the University of Connecticut men's hockey team battled to a tough loss at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum, this time it was a 3-1 decision to Canisius on Friday night.
The Huskies kept things close throughout the game thanks in part to their strong defense on power play opportunities as they killed off eight of Canisius' nine extra man opportunities on the night. Freshman Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) was a big part of that as he made 29 saves during the game, 10 during power play opportunities.
The Griffs were the first to get on the board when Carl Hudson recorded Canisius' lone power play goal of the night. He was aided by Josh Heidinger and Cory Conacher to give Griffs a 1-0 lead entering the first intermission.
Canisius added to their lead in the second on a delayed penalty goal. The Griffs brought out their extra man and used the opportunity to extend their lead to two goals at 14:33 in the second.
After failing to capitalize on a five-on-three opportunity in the first period, the Huskies used their second five-on-three opportunity of the game to their advantage to score their lone goal of the game 7:22 into the third period. After a few quick passes started off by Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) and Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.), Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) tallied his sixth goal of the year, and fourth of the power play kind to cut the lead to one.
But Canisius' regained the two goal lead at 16:41 as Preston Shupe netted his sixth goal of the year as the Griffs took the first game of the weekend series, 3-1.
With the assist, Ambrosie has recorded points in back-to-back games, and four out of the last five games of the season.
The Huskies return to action at the Freitas Ice Forum on Saturday, February 6 when they close out their season series with the Griffs at 7:05 p.m.
