Storrs, Conn. - The Connecticut men's hockey team fell, 4-1, tonight to Princeton in the 18th Toyota UConn Hockey Classic Championship. Princeton's Jeremy Goodwin put home his first collegiate goal to record the game winner at the start of the second period. Princeton improves to 10-5-0 while UConn falls to 6-8-3. UConn goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) finished the game with 39 saves, including 23 in the second period.
Princeton jumped out to an early lead with a goal from defender and Tournament MVP Taylor Fedun. Fedun took a pass from Rob Kleebaum at the left face-off circle and fired a shot over Bartus' left right shoulder for a 1-0 lead at 4:18.
UConn went into the locker room down 1-0 after one period but it was not for a lack of chances. The Huskies outshot the Tigers, 14-5, in the opening 20 minutes with UConn's best chance coming with just 30 seconds remaining in the period. Senior captain Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) took a pass at the Princeton blue line and skated in all alone on Princeton netminder Sean Bonar. Olson aimed a shot towards the left post but Bonar made a nice blocker save to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Goodwin's goal at the start of the second period was the result of a pair of well-placed passes from Matt Farris and Kevin Ross. Goodwin found time at the bottom of the left face-off circle and beat Bartus for his first collegiate goal.
The Huskies responded just over a minute later with a goal from junior Marcello Ranallo (Burnaby, B.C.). Freshman Billy Latta (West Chester, Pa.) stationed himself behind the Princeton net before sending a pass in front to Ranallo. Ranallo slammed home his second goal of the season from the right doorstep to close the gap to 2-1 in favor of Princeton.
It was all Princeton after that as the Tigers outshot Connecticut, 24-7, in the second period alone. Bartus came up big in the middle stanza, making 23 saves to keep UConn in contention heading into the final period.
Bonar and the Princeton defense, ranked sixth in the nation at 2.13 goals allowed per game, shut the door in the third period. The Tigers limited UConn to just four shots on frame in the final period.
Princeton added a pair of insurance tallies late in the third with a strike from Eric Carlson at 15:54 and an empty-net goal from Kevin Lohry to close out the scoring at 4-1.
Lohry joined Fedun and forward Andrew Ammon on the All-Tournament Team for Princeton.
UConn senior defender Stevie Bergin (Groton, Mass.), Garrett Bartus and Billy Latta made up the rest of the All-Tournament Team.
UConn will be in action next when the Huskies host AHA for Mercyhurst for a pair of contests on January 7 and 8. Both games will begin at 7:05 p.m. in Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
