Storrs, Conn. - It was announced on Monday, December 13 that UConn senior Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) was named Atlantic Hockey Association Player of the Week while freshman Jordan Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was named the league's Rookie of the Week. The two players combined for four goals and three assists in UConn's 9-3 victory over Sacred Heart on Friday, December 10.
Olson earns Player of the Week honors after scoring two goals, including the game winner, and adding two assists. Olson put UConn ahead for good on Friday when he stationed himself in the slot and tipped in a shot from the point for his sixth goal of the season midway through the second period. Olson added an insurance tally later in the period to make it 6-2.
On the season, Olson ranks tied for first on the team with seven goals. He's added four assists for 11 points. Olson will come into the 18th Annual Toyota UConn Hockey Classic tied for third on the all-time goal scorer's list in UConn Division I history with 42 career strikes. He ranks ninth all-time in Division I history at UConn with 75 points.
Sims earns his first weekly award of the season after being named to the Honor Roll on November 1. The freshman forward put the game out of reach on Friday against Sacred Heart when he notched two-straight goals late in the second period to make it 8-2. Sims also assisted on Olson's second goal to make it 6-2. In his first season in Storrs, Sims has already notched seven goals and five assists for 12 points.
This marks back-to-back Player and Rookie of the Week awards for the Huskies after Cole Schneider (Williamsville, N.Y.) earned both awards for his hat trick in an 8-5 victory over Niagara on December 4.
UConn is in action next when it hosts the 18th Annual UConn Toyota Hockey Classic on Wednesday and Thursday, December 29 and 30. The Huskies will face Holy Cross at 7:15 on Wednesday night before facing either Bowling Green or Princeton on Thursday. The Consolation Game is set for 4 p.m. with the Championship at 7:15.
