Walker Nets 30 In 62-55 Victory Over UNH

STORRS, CONN. (November 30, 2010) -- Kemba Walker scored 30 points for the fourth time in five games as seventh-ranked Connecticut outlasted pesky New Hampshire, 62-55, Tuesday evening before a crowd of 8,558 at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The win is the Huskies' sixth straight to start the season, while the Wildcats drop to 4-2.
Walker started slowly but scored 15 points in each half as he has now scored 180 points in six games, the most ever at Connecticut. Walker made seven-of-16 from the field and was a solid 14-of-16 from the line. He added five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
The Huskies trailed by six (34-28) with 16:01 to play but scored nine straight points over a span of 2:17 to take a lead they would not relinquish. Alex Oriakhi scored six points in the key run and Shabazz Napier made a three-point play on a coast-to-coast drive as well. The Wildcats got within one on two occasions, but they were never able to maintain possession with a chance to take the lead. Walker made his last six free throws to salt away the game.
Napier came off of the bench to score 11 points, the fourth time in six games that he has reached double figures. Oriakhi scored seven points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and he tied his career-high with five blocks. It was the fourth time in six games that he has reached double figures in rebounding.
Roscoe Smith blocked a career-best four shots, while Jamal Coombs-McDaniel came off of the bench to snare six defensive rebounds.
Ferg Myrick led the Wildcats with 19 points, while James Valladares added 12. Dane DiLiegro scored seven and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening twenty minutes combining to make just 18-of-61 shots. The Huskies blocked 10 of their season-high 13 shots in the first half. The Wildcats took a 24-23 lead into the locker room. Connecticut shot better from the field after intermission, shooting 46 percent (11 of 24).
Connecticut is now 113-4 under Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun against non-conference New England foes. They have now won 110 of 111 games against non-BIG EAST Conference New England rivals.
The Huskies return to the hardwood on Friday, December 3 when they play host to Maryland-Baltimore County at the XL Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the contest will be televised by SNY.
