The UConn men's hockey team, fresh off a 3-3 tie at No. 7 Maine last Saturday (Oct. 9), will travel to North Andover, Mass. to take on another Hockey East opponent in the Merrimack Warriors. The game is set for 7 p.m. in Lawler Arena.
Connecticut (0-0-1, 0-0-0 Atlantic Hockey) comes into the game after earning a 3-3 tie at No. 7 Maine on October, 9. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead early in the first period with a power-play goal from sophomore Miles Winter (Horsham, Pa.). UConn gave up two goals in the second period and was forced to rally back to even the score on two separate occasions. Sophomore Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) evened the score at 2-2 with a power-play strike late in the second. Sophomore Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.) completed the improbable result with his first goal of the season with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Garrett Bartus was sensational in net, stopping 40 shots. He was named Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week for his performance.
Merrimack (0-0-1, 0-0-0 Hockey East) played to a 4-4 tie with Niagara last Saturday evening. The Warriors are receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com and Coaches polls. Last season, Merrimack boasted the eighth-best power play in the nation at 21.1-percent. The Warriors are led by sophomore forward Stephane Da Costa. Da Costa finished 2009-10 as the seventh-highest scoring player in the nation, tallying 16 goals and 29 assists for 45 points. He was named the NCAA National Rookie of the Year, Hockey East Rookie of the Year and a Hockey East Second-Team All-Star. In goal for Merrimack for the majority of last season, and against Niagara, is junior Joe Cannata. Cannata finished 2009-10 with a 3.04 goals against average based on a .902 save percentage.
Saturday's game will be the grand-opening of the newly renovated Lawler Rink at Merrimack.
