STORRS, Conn. - The No. 5 University of Connecticut field hockey team got off to a fast start and never looked back as it cruised to an 8-1 win over Fairfield on Sunday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
The Huskies erupted for seven first-half goals, scored by seven different players, as it opened a decisive 7-1 lead at intermission.
With the win, Connecticut improves to 2-0 on the season, while Fairfield slips to 0-1.
The eight goals scored marked the most by Connecticut since it tallied eight against New Hampshire on Sept. 14, 2005.
Ali Blankmeyer (Convent Station, N.J.) got things started with a goal that was assisted by Loren Sherer (Essex, England) at 4:09.
Melissa Gonzalez (Mohegan Lake, N.Y.) followed with her first goal of the year with an unassisted tally at 8:03. Rayell Heistand (Hamburg, Pa.) converted on a penalty stroke just 32 seconds later to increase the margin to 3-0.
The Huskies continued to pile on as it added two goals in a span of 12 seconds - first Cara Silverman (Roseland, N.J.) notched her second goal of the season at 20:14 before Sherer connected on her second tally of the season at 27:14 to make the score 6-0.
Jestine Angelini (Boiling Springs, Pa.) converted on the Huskies' second penalty stroke of the afternoon at 28:36 to make it 7-0.
Fairfield finally got on the board with one minute reamining before intermission when Anne Nieuwenhuis scored at 34:00.
Blankmeyer registered her second goal of the game at 49:29 to round out the games's scoring. Sherer finished the contest with three assists.
For the game, the Huskies out-shot Fairfield 37-8 and attempted 12 penalty corners while limiting the Stags to three.
The Huskies close out their current three-game homestand to open the season on Thursday, Sept. 3 against Holy Cross in a 7:00 p.m. (ET) start at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
