SOUTH BEND, Ind. - In its final game of the 2009 regular-season, the University of Connecticut lacrosse team was unable to meet the offensive efforts of No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday. The Fighting Irish opened with a double-digit scoring run en route to its 20-5 victory over the Huskies at Alumni Field.
Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) was the first UConn player to hit the back of the net, ending an unanswered scoring run by Notre Dame (12-4, 5-2) that included four goals from Tewaaraton finalist Jillian Byers.
In addition to Michele's 33rd of the season, Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) added a pair of her own less than 10 minutes apart in the second half. The first was assisted by Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) and the second gave Michele her 152nd career point at UConn.
Rookies M.E. Lapham (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Amanda Pollock (Liverpool, N.Y.) were also able to score for the Huskies. Each tallied one goal while Tupper led the freshman with two points from a pair of assists. Pollock's goal gave Connecticut the last goal of the game with a second remaining on the clock.
Anna Wallingford (Littleton, Colo.) finished with 12 saves for the second-consecutive game and sixth game with double-figures in saves this season. Wallingford started the game and ends the year with a 3-9 record. She was replaced by Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) who came in at the half. Moulton had three saves in the game. Each UConn netminder allowed 10 goals.
The loss marks the conclusion of the 2009 season for the lacrosse program. Connecticut concludes the year with a 3-13 record, including a 2-5 mark in BIG EAST play. It is the most victories in conference play since the 2005 season.
