STORRS, Conn. - After a 10-9 victory on Senior Night, the University of Connecticut lacrosse team will need another balanced scoring effort and timely free-position goals at Notre Dame on Saturday. In their regular season finale against the nationally-ranked eighth team in the nation, the Huskies look to snap a three game losing streak to the Fighting Irish at noon.
UConn has lost the last three games to Notre Dame and fell 18-11 in Storrs last season. Coming off Wednesday's exciting 10-9, the team hopes to carry that momentum into South Bend.
Every senior of the six member class acknowledged prior to the first draw control contributed something to the effort against Holy Cross. Seniors Kim McGinty (Huntington, N.Y.) and Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) each scored twice while Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) netted one of her own. On the defensive side of the ball each senior collected at least one ground ball.
With two goals against the Crusaders, Michele surpassed her previous season-best goal effort with 32 goals in 2009. She needs four more to hit the 100-goal mark of her career.
In addition to a balanced attack, it was Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) with a free-position goal that put UConn ahead 9-8 and Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson, Ohio) with the gamewinner at 1:03, giving the team its third victory of the season.
