PHILADELPHIA -- Junior forward Stanley Robinson (Birmingham, Ala.) scored 24 points to lead four teammates in double figure scoring as No. 1-seed Connecticut routed No. 16-seed Chattanooga, 103-47, in a NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship West Region First Round game at the Wachovia Center Thursday afternoon.
The Huskies improve to 28-4 and will play Texas A&M on Saturday at a time to be determined. The Mocs conclude their season at 18-17.
The Huskies played the entire contest without Hall of Fame head coach Jim Calhoun, who was sidelined with an undisclosed illness. UConn was able to record the third-largest margin of victory in a NCAA Tournament game history (54 points) in his absence.
The game was actually tight, at 17-15, when the Huskies asserted themselves. Connecticut scored the game's next 14 points, the middle 10 of which were scored by A.J. Price (Amityville, N.Y.) in a span of 1:41. Price made three consecutive three-pointers and added a free throw in his personal scoring spurt. The Huskies ended the first half on a 31-5 run, holding the Mocs to just one field goal in the last 11:57 of the half.
UConn paced by Robinson (he scored the first six), scored the second half's first 15 points meaning that over a span of just over 16 minutes the Huskies outscored their opponent, 46-5.
Robinson made 11-of-17 field goal attempts, including several dunks, many of the alley-oop variety. It marked the first time in his career that he has scored 20-plus points in consecutive games. He had plenty of company in the scoring column. Price finished with 20 points, marking the fourth time in his career (and second time this season) that he scored 20-plus points in consecutive contests.
Center Hasheem Thabeet (Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania) was his usual dominant self, scoring 20 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and blocking two shots. It was the 26th career double-double for Thabeet and 17th this season. Senior forward Jeff Adrien (Brookline, Mass.) overcame a slow start to finish with 13 points, a game-high 16 rebounds and four assists. Adrien recorded his 46th career double-double and his 13th this year.
Freshman point guard Kemba Walker (Bronx, N.Y.) had 10 points and six assists off of the bench, while senior guard Craig Austrie (Stamford, Conn.) had a game-high seven assists, the most he has registered since dishing out 14 against Quinnipiac in his freshman campaign.
Sophomore guard Donnell Beverly (Hawthorne, Calif.) had seven points and five assists in eight productive minutes off of the bench.
The Mocs were led by Kevin Goffney, who scored 15 points.
The Huskies enjoyed a whopping 58-34 advantage on the backboards and held the Mocs to just 26 percent shooting (17-of-66). Connecticut shot 52 percent from the field, had 28 assists and committed just nine turnovers.
Combined with the 117 points scored in the BIG EAST Tournament loss to Syracuse, the Huskies broke the 100-point barrier for the second-straight game. The last time Connecticut accomplished that feat was in the 2003-04 season when the Huskies turned the trick against Iona and Ball State.
