STORRS, Conn. (April 6, 2008) - The University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team led for much of the first half, but a late run by Rutgers gave the Scarlet Knights a 10-6 win Sunday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex. UConn is now 1-11 on the season and 0-4 in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers improves to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) and Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) each scored two goals to lead the Huskies, but it wasn't enough with three Scarlet Knight players tallying hat tricks.
The Huskies jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals by both Michele and Ryan and managed to stay a step ahead of the game until the 2:50 mark in the first half when Rutgers tied the game at 4-4. Kristen Anderson scored the go-ahead goal with 0:19 left in the period and the first goal of the second half to give Rutgers a 6-4 lead.
Rutgers kept that advantage for the next 17:01 as neither team scored through the middle third of the period. Michele finally broke the dry spell at 9:36 with a free position goal to cut the margin to 6-5, but Rutgers' Jennifer Schmitt then scored on back-to-back tallies to stretch the lead to 8-5 with 7:26 to play.
Lauren Gunning (Hunt Valley, Md.) scored her second career goal at 3:51 to break up Rutgers' final two scores of the game by Brooke Cantwell. It was not enough to spur a comeback, however, as the Huskies dropped the 10-6 decision to the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers held an 11-7 advantage in draw controls and out-shot the Huskies 21-18.
UConn returns to action Wednesday against Boston College at 6:00 p.m. The game will be played on Flahive Field at Westwood High School in Westwood, Mass. Directions to the field can be found .
