Rowing Has Busy Day In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (March 30, 2008) -- The University of Connecticut rowing team had a busy day on Sunday as it took on St. Joseph's in the morning and then Villanova in the afternoon.
In the St. Joseph's meet, the varsity eight race was won by the Hawks in a time of 6:38.3 while UConn finished in 6:41.6. The UConn boat in that race was senior Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), junior Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), senior Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), senior Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), sophomore Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), sophomore Jennifer Reynolds (South Hero, Vt.), sophomore Katie Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.), sophomore Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.) and junior Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.).
The second varsity eight race was won by St. Joseph's in 6:56.1 and UConn finished in 7:18.4. The UConn boat was freshman Mollie Riester (Buffalo, N.Y.), freshman Gretchen Stern (Rexford, N.Y.), senior Maddie Bey (South Windsor, Conn.), freshman Audrey Squire (Kinnelon, N.J.), sophomore Lizzie Dargie (Waterford, Conn.), sophomore Charisse Laughery (Columbia, Conn.), sophomore Liz Harsley (Riverdale, N.J.), senior Allyson Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.).
The varsity four race was won by UConn in 7:54.5 while St. Joseph's came in at 7:59.5. That Husky boat was sophomore Leah Masopust (Morris, Conn.), sophomore Mikey Sevick (Simsbury, Conn.), freshman Efmorfia Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.), sophomore Hayley Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.) and sophomore Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.).
St. Joseph's won the novice eight race in 7:01.1 while UConn A came in at 7:32.5 and UConn B in 7:42.9. The UConn A boat was freshman Hailey Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.), freshman Julie Tibbetts (East Lyme, Conn.), freshman Robin Calhoun (Evanston, Ill.), sophomore Sylvia Czupi (Woodbridge, Conn.), freshman Isabella Draper (Bridgeport, Conn.), sophomore Margaret Hoagland (Chaplin, Conn.), freshman Kim Weber (Ridgefield, Conn.), freshman Amanda Cote (Wakefield, R.I.) and sophomore Lizzie Littlewood (Mystic, Conn.).
The UConn B boat was sophomore Sofia Medina (Hartford, Conn.), freshman Brittany Weiss (New Milford, Conn.), freshman Brittany Koether (Orange, Conn.), sophomore Jackie Ortuso (Somerset, N.J.), sophomore Manouchka Sanon (Ramapo, N.Y.), sophomore Allison Cote (Granby, Conn.), sophomore Lynn Dusault (Somerset, N.J.), freshman Brittany Schramm (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and freshman Taylor Pence (Vienna, Va.).
The afternoon meet against Villanova saw the Huskies win the varsity eight race in 5:53.8 to Villanova's 6:02.0. All the races in the Villanova meet were 1,500 meters and run against the current. UConn ran the same lineups as it did in the morning match against St. Joseph's.
UConn also won the second varsity eight in 6:11.2 while Villanova came in at 6:16.1. The novice eight race was won by Villanova in 6:20.9 while UConn A was 6:26.6 and UConn B was 6:35.8.
UConn returns to action with a pair of home meets next weekend as it takes on Trinity on Saturday and Fairfield on Sunday.
