AMHERST, Mass.ย โ The UConn women's rowing team competed at the UMass on Saturday, racing four varsity eight crews against UMass, Williams, and Smith over the 5,000-meter course.
The Huskies were led by the Varsity Eight, which placed third overall with a time of 17:58.5. UConn's Second Varsity Eight finished sixth in 18:24.8, while the Third Varsity Eight crossed the line in 19:04.4 to place 10th. The Fourth Varsity Eight rounded out the day with a 13th-place finish in 19:27.5.
Head Coach Gordon Getsinger was encouraged by what he saw from his team on the water.
"It was a fantastic day of racing on the UMass course. The sun was out, the water was calm, and the conditions were picture-perfect. We couldn't have asked for a better day to compete against UMass, Smith, and Williams College over the 5K distance.
I thought all of our boats raced incredibly hard today, and it was exciting to see our athletes putting into action so much of what we've been working on in practice. The team brought a tremendous level of focus and energy to the racecourse. Each week, we're looking to elevate the way we approach race day, and I've been really impressed with how our athletes are handling the intensity of competition with confidence, composure, and professionalism.
It's also a great opportunity for our program to line up against teams with a strong history of success at the NCAA Championships. Both UMass at the Division I level and Williams at the Division III level have established traditions of competing on the national stage. I thought our boats did a great job of pushing the level of competition out there today.
I love the direction we're heading. Our athletes are embracing the work, learning with every race, and continuing to raise their expectations of themselves and one another. The exciting part is that we're only going to keep getting faster."
Senior Varsity Eight coxswain Izzy Kellman reflected on the growth the team showed from the previous weekend.
"Today was a huge improvement from last weekend's race. It was so much fun going out there with the rest of the team and competing as one big squad. I am really looking forward to seeing what our team can do at the Head of the Charles Regatta and moving into the spring season!"
Second Varsity Eight rower Casey Coleman emphasized the team's collective effort throughout the day.
"Today was a great team effort, and everyone pushed each other to compete at our best. We supported one another throughout the race, and I'm proud of how we came together as a team. We'll continue to build off this performance and get better together."
The Huskies return to action next weekend at the prestigiousย Head of the Charles Regattaย in Boston on October 17th.
