Rowing Finishes Third At Yankee Cup

KINGSTON, R.I. (March 29, 2008) -- The University of Connecticut rowing team finished third at the annual Yankee Cup on Saturday morning as Rhode Island won the overall title with 29 points, followed by Massachusetts with 22, the Huskies with 15 and New Hampshire with 10.
Rhode Island won the varsity eight race in a time of 7:41.0 with New Hampshire coming in second at 7:50.0, Massachusetts in third at 7:51.9 and UConn in fourth at 7:52.0. The UConn varsity eight was senior Katie Beasley (Centerville, Mass.), junior Kathy Les (South Windsor, Conn.), senior Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), senior Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), sophomore Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), sophomore Jennifer Reynolds (South Hero, Vt.), sophomore Katie Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.), sophomore Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.) and junior Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.).
UMass won the second varsity race in 8:04.3 followed by Rhode Island in 8:12.3, UConn in 8:35.0 and New Hampshire in 8:39.7. The UConn boat was freshman Mollie Riester (Buffalo, N.Y.), freshman Gretchen Stern (Rexford, N.Y.), senior Maddie Bey (South Windsor, Conn.), freshman Audrey Squire (Kinnelon, N.J.), sophomore Lizzie Dargie (Waterford, Conn.), sophomore Charisse Laughery (Columbia, Conn.), sophomore Liz Harsley (Riverdale, N.J.), senior Allyson Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.).
Rhode Island won the varsity four race in 8:58.3 followed by the URI B team in 9:21.4, UMass in 9:40.7 and UConn in 9:48.6. The UConn boat consisted of senior Heather Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.), sophomore Mikey Sevick (Simsbury, Conn.), freshman Efmorfia Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.), sophomore Hayley Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.) and sophomore Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.).
The novice eight race went to Rhode Island in 8:15.4 with Massachusetts in second at 8:18.2, UConn third in 8:49.4 and UConn B in fourth at 9:20.1. The UConn boat was freshman Hailey Rosa (Mansfield, Conn.), freshman Julie Tibbetts (East Lyme, Conn.), freshman Robin Calhoun (Evanston, Ill.), sophomore Sylvia Czupi (Woodbridge, Conn.), freshman Isabella Draper (Bridgeport, Conn.), sophomore Margaret Hoagland (Chaplin, Conn.), freshman Kim Weber (Ridgefield, Conn.), freshman Amanda Cote (Wakefield, R.I.) and sophomore Lizzie Littlewood (Mystic, Conn.).
The Huskies return to action on Sunday with a pair of races in Philadelphia. UConn takes on St. Joseph's in the morning and Villanova in afternoon action.
