Women's Volleyball Defeats Long Island, 3-1

STORRS, Conn. (September 15, 2007) - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team defeated to Long Island 3-1 (30-25, 30-28, 27-30, 30-24) in the Huskies' second match of the UConn Toyota Classic, Saturday afternoon in Gampel Pavilion.
Connecticut started the match with a game one win while hitting 32.1-percent, a tournament best for the Huskies. Game two was a close battle that saw UConn come out on top at the end with a 30-28 win. The Huskies hit just 19.5-percent compared to the Blackbirds' 21.1-percent but were able to pull out a win.
Long Island took control of the match in the third game, shutting down the Huskies to just a .089 hitting percentage with 13 kills in 45 attempts. But the Huskies were able to come back from the game three loss to take the fourth and final game 30-24.
Freshman Lauren Lamberti (Cary, Ill.) led the Huskies with 13 kills, tying her career high while senior Sadé Chambers (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) added eight kills and three digs. Freshman Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.) also came up big for the Huskies, recording seven kills, four digs and six block assists.
UConn setter Bridget Denson-Dorman (Golden Valley, Minn.) recorded a season-high seven kills while dishing out 41 assists and picking up 14 digs on the afternoon. Libero Jessica Isaac (Erlanger, Ky.) added 22 digs for the Huskies in the win.
Long Island was led by Martina Racic with 19 kills while Martina Wagner and Shleby Heggie added 18 and 15 kills, respectively. Dunja Milin dished out 33 assists while fellow setter, Lindsey Patty had 24.
The opening match of the day featured Middle Tennessee State defeating Hofstra 3-1 (28-30, 30-28, 30-20, 30-28). Ashley Adams led the way for the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee with 19 kills and 14 digs while Leslie Clark dished out 51 assists. Lauren Engle had 12 kills for the Pride and Katie Wilkerson had 13.
The UConn Toyota Classic will continue its play as Hofstra will take on Long Island at 5:00 p.m. this evening followed by a 7:30 p.m. match featuring UConn and Middle Tennessee State.
