STORRS, Conn. (May 24, 2007) - Three senior members of the University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's (IWLCA) All-Northeast Team, as announced by the organization Thursday. Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) and Clare Schwan (Albany, N.Y.) each took home first team honors, while classmate Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.) garnered second team accolades.
As a senior midfielder, Burke set school records for assists and points in a game (seven and 10, respectively), a season (58, 100) and for a career (103, 245). She also led Division I in assists per game (3.63) and was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year.
Schwan led the team in caused turnovers (30) and ground balls (39), while maintaining second place in both categories in the BIG EAST throughout her redshirt senior season. She tallied the team-high in caused turnovers six times this season, tallying two or more on nine separate occasions, including a career-high four vs. Northwestern.
Link shared much of the goal-scoring duties with Burke, as she tallied at least one goal in 24 straight games, dating back to the 2006 season, and put up at least one in 15-of-16 games this year. She finished her career ranked fourth in the UConn record books for career goals and sixth in career points.
The IWLCA honored a total of 128 student-athletes in Division I this year with inclusion on one of eight All-Regional teams, with each of the four regions, the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South and West/Midwest naming a first and a second team.
All 128 athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams, which will be announced on May 29. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 16, 2006 in Downingtown, Pa.
