Rutgers Hands No. 18 Women's Lacrosse 11-10 Loss

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 7, 2007) - Katie Batiuk scored a game-high five goals as No. 17 nationally-ranked Rutgers defeated the 18th-ranked University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team, 11-10, Saturday afternoon at Yurcak Field. With the loss, the Huskies dip to 6-5 on the year with a 0-3 mark in the BIG EAST, while Rutgers improves to 9-2 and 2-1 in the conference.
UConn's all-time leading scorer Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) led the Huskies with two goals and four assists against the Scarlet Knights, while Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.), Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.) and Tori Joel (Bel Air, Md.) each added a pair of tallies to support the attack.
Both teams jumped out to a quick start as Burke opened scoring :47 into the game and scoring continued until the teams were tied at 3-3 after just over 10 minutes of play. The score remained close throughout the rest of the half with UConn and Rutgers tying it up five times before the half. Burke, Link and Williams each scored all their goals in the opening frame.
Coming out of the intermission with an 8-8 score, Batiuk rattled off back-to-back goals to put the Scarlet Knights on top 10-8 with 21:18 to play. Laura Trzasko (Plainsboro, N.J.) and Joel fought to keep the Huskies in the game, but Rutgers would not relinquish the lead down the stretch.
The Huskies return to action Wednesday afternoon at 3 against Loyola at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The Greyhounds are currently 2-9 overall and 0-3 in the BIG EAST.
