STORRS, Conn. (April 17, 2007) - Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) scored four goals and added three assists as the No. 19 nationally-ranked University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team defeated New Hampshire, 17-9, Tuesday afternoon at a cold and rain-soaked George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. With the win, the Huskies improve to 8-5 on the year, while the Wildcats dip to 6-7 this season.
Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) each added three to the effort, while Laura Trzasko (Plainsboro, N.J.) added one goal and three caused turnovers to rule the defensive end.
For the second straight game, UConn fell behind early, but quickly regrouped to come back and take over the game. With a 3-0 deficit, Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.) led the Huskies' attack by scoring two of the team's next four goals in just under six minutes to give UConn the 4-3 advantage.
New Hampshire tied it up once more at 10:54, but the Huskies went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 10-4 and the Wildcats would get no closer than five the rest of the way. Burke scored back-to-back goals within :30 to start off the scoring spree, followed by two tallies apiece from Link and Ryan to close out the first period.
Coming out of the intermission with a 10-5 score, Tori Joel (Bel Air, Md.) sandwiched a pair of goals around an unassisted tally from Link to give the Huskies their biggest lead of the day at 13-5. The Wildcats would pull within seven on four occasions throughout the second half, but UConn constantly stayed one step ahead with the help of Ryan and Katie Devaney (Fayetteville, N.Y.), who netted her second goal of the season at the 3:19 mark to make the score 16-8.
Each team would add another down the stretch with Kim McGinty (Hungtington, N.Y.) getting the final say off an assist from Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) to account for the final 17-9 score.
This is the largest margin of victory for the Huskies this season since a season-opening, 16-4 win over Central Connecticut.
UConn returns to action Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. This game was originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, but was postponed to the nor'easter that has plagued the region for the last few days. The Crusaders are 10-4 on the season and are currently on a three-game win streak after taking down Lehigh, 17-4, Saturday.
