Rowing Finishes Tied For Second At Yankee Cup

KINGSTON, R.I. (March 31, 2007) -- The University of Connecticut women’s rowing team finished in a tie for second place at the annual Yankee Cup on Saturday. The annual meet between New England state universities saw Rhode Island win the team title and Massachusetts finish in a tie for second with UConn. New Hampshire finished fourth.
UConn finished third in the varsity eight with a time of 8:07.06 as Rhode Island won in 7:31.02 and UMass was second in 7:40.7. New Hampshire had broken equipment during warm-ups and was unable to race. In a second varsity eight race, UConn defeated New Hampshire 7:36.6 to 7:41.1. The UConn varsity boat was Gabbey LaChance (Mystic, Conn.), Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga.), Kelly McGary (Lewisville, N.C.), Erin Andersen (Barrington, R.I.), Olga Solovyova (New London, Conn.), Katherine Les (South Windsor, Conn.), Nicole Rapp (Mansfield, Conn.), Kali Garges (Queche, Vt.) and Kerri Mocko (Stafford Springs, Conn.).
The Husky junior varsity eight finished in third at 8:10.9 as Rhode Island won in 7:47.5 and UMass was second in 7:53.0. That boat was Katie Beasley (Ceterville, Mass.), Arielle Shiely (Clinton, Conn.), Theresa Nolan (Atlantic City, N.J.), Monica Parker (Glastonbury, Conn.), Maddie Bey (South Windsor, Conn.), Rebecca Likar (East Lyme, Conn.), Sarah Willhoft (Manchester, Conn.), Megan Kielty (West Newton, Mass.) and Stephanie Bryant (Natick, Mass.).
UConn’s novice eight finished in second place at 8:15.1 while Rhode Island was first again in 7:56.9. UMass was third at 8:22.3 and New Hampshire fourth at 9:05.7. That boat was Leah Masopust (Morris, Conn.), Deborah Chesser (Albany, N.Y.), Stephanie Lamothe (Wallingford, Conn.), Lindsay Mackay (Lisbon, Conn.), Elizabeth Dargie (Waterford, Conn.), Jennifer Reynolds (South Hero, Vt.), Kylie Calzone (Redding, Conn.), Kathryn Rauscher (Manchester, Conn.) and Kristen Beasley (Centerville, Mass.)
The varsity four was also second behind URI. The Rams won in a time of 8:28.5 while UConn was second in 8:42.3 and UMass third in 9:13.4. That boat was Heather Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.), Ally Zoppa (East Hartford, Conn.), Heather Gates (Monmouth Beach, N.J.), Michelle Stathers (Tolland, Conn.) and Kathryn Dobbins (Southington, Conn.).
The UConn novice four rowed in 9:55.7, second to New Hampshire at 9:02.8. UMass came in at 10:15.9. That boat was Kelly Dwyer (Brewster, N.Y.), Julie Konstantino (Orange, Conn.), Alicia Cairns (Waterford, Conn.), Sade Owoye (Danbury, Conn.) and Brynne Davies (Middlebury, Conn.).
"Our lack of practice time on the water due to our frozen lake had a big impact on today's results,” says UConn head coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry. “I still am confident that we have a strong, competitive team and we are no where near our potential top speed. I am excited about getting on the water again to practice and try some new line-ups.”
UConn races at home against Villanova on Friday, April 6 at 8:30 a.m. at Coventry Lake.
